Health every day
Support for health, prevention and personal care — because a child learns better when they feel well.
About the programme
“Health every day” grew out of a real experience that showed us how closely health and learning are connected. During our educational-support sessions, we noticed a child who was always frowning, withdrawn and seemed very tired. At first we thought they were not paying attention or found it hard to concentrate. Then we understood it was not a lack of interest: the child needed a medical check-up and support for a health problem that was affecting how they took part in activities.
From that moment we understood that, sometimes, before a child can learn, we need to make sure they feel well — that they see well, hear well, can take care of themselves and receive the basic support they need. That is how this programme came about: from the belief that health, hygiene and personal care are not separate from education, but part of the essential conditions a child needs in order to be present, attentive and confident.
What we do, concretely
We piloted the programme in Dolj county, through two practical activities — a preventive screening and an activity dedicated to personal care:
- Basic preventive medical screening, carried out with the support of volunteer doctors and medical partners, to identify possible health or skin-care issues early.
- A self-care and personal-care activity — hygiene, haircuts, simple everyday care routines.
- Explanations children can understand about health, hygiene and prevention — why they matter in everyday life and in how they take part in school and activities.
- Follow-up on identified needs, where possible, through further support.
Impact so far
- 25+ children supported through health, prevention and personal-care activities
- 20 children from Dolj county took part in a preventive screening session
- 2 partner doctors and 2 specialists involved in screenings, basic consultations and care activities
- 8+ volunteers involved in preparation, coordination and logistics
- 80+ hours of involvement from volunteers and specialists
Beyond the activities themselves, this involvement meant time dedicated to preparation, coordination, communication with partners and supporting the children throughout.
